Minimum Unit Pricing - Wales

17 Oct
2019

Today, Wales took a further step towards the establishment of a minimum unit price (MUP) for alcohol.  The Welsh Assembly have laid down for consultation within the Assembly itself The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (minimum unit price) (Wales) Regulations 2019.

This proposes a minimum unit price for alcohol of 50p in Wales and will place it in line with the Scottish provision which has now been in place for a period of time.

The Regulations are to be debated in the Welsh National Assembly on 12th November, 2019 and if approved a proposed introduction date is 2nd March, 2020.

Between these dates the Welsh Assembly is to publish research on the impact of the minimum price on those people who are dependent on alcohol or heavy drinkers.  Additionally, the Welsh Government has already submitted a report to the EU Commission providing a detailed response for justification of the introduction of minimum unit pricing and why the Welsh Government remains committed to the introduction of the legislation

We will update if any material issues arise following the debate on 12th November.
